LRQ2 What’s verifying news? Is it fact-checking, fraud detection? What about number of sources? (Q inspired by @Bindisha) #wjchat

@wjchat Morning guys. I’m a journalist now working in public affairs in Oz. #wjchat

@wjchat LRA2 Thanks @bindisha! IMO verifying the news is all those things. It’s answering the question: How else do you know that? #wjchat

LRQ3 How do you use social media @WSJ to verify news? Has social media changed daily operations at the @WSJ? #wjchat

Funny thing about social verification = the blue mark next to a name is no verification at all. Like using Wikipedia to vet facts #wjchat

@Jillian_Beck awesome! Thanks for joining #wjchat

Good evening, @wjchat #wjchat folks. I am a media wizard, formerly with @current @ajam @mtvnews. I like churros and social justice movements

@ShaunaReporter @elanazak @davemeddows @GenePark @MikeRoe @ax_li good group brewing at #wjchat as per usual

@elanazak @wjchat @Bindisha Agree that it’s all those. I’m very wary of social media now with all of the Internet hoaxes out there. #wjchat

LRA2 / verifying news starts out with having a finely tuned bullshit detector #wjchat

@adampopescu You mean…Wikipedia isn’t…WHAT!?! #wjchat

@dcap damn – wizard status – watch out #wjchat lol

@Jillian_Beck I hear you. I find it’s helpful to just look at things with a critical eye. How do you know that’s real, true etc? #wjchat

RT @adampopescu: .@wjchat hi #wjchat. I’m Adam, I’m a writer and reporter, passionate about my new crowdfunding project @BeaconReader http:

Social is a great tool to see what people are talking about in real time. But it can easily be manipulated + doesn’t mean it’s true #wjchat

@wjchat A1: There are so many tools available to journalists, including:
-TweetDeck
-Storyful
-Google Image Search/TinEye
#wjchat

RT @wjchat: Let’s get started with our general questions! Q1A What kinds of techniques and tools do you use to verify news? #wjchat

.@wjchat best way to verify news of any kind is to ask the source / subject involved. Directly. No 3rd parties or he/she said. THEM #wjchat

@wjchat Sounds stupid, but pick up the damn phone. So many things can be verified with a phone call. #wjchat

@wjchat A1A I will read reports – if something comes my way, I will pick up the phone and call (or email) to verify. #wjchat

Asking a source or subject means you may have to pick up a phone, knock on a door, and not rely on PR or your peers #realjournalism #wjchat

;) Wizard=I do a lot. My last formal title was swing producer, digital content & community. I’m like the MacGyver of digital strat. #wjchat

@elanazak Definitely. I feel like social media is a good jumping off point, but shouldn’t be the be-all end-all of your reporting. #wjchat

RT @wjchat: Let’s get started with our general questions! Q1A What kinds of techniques and tools do you use to verify news? #wjchat

@wjchat for photos, google has a stupid easy reverse image search thats essentially drag n drop http://t.co/pdwOzYTgNd #wjchat

@wjchat A1A Talking to people. (Its anxiety-producing for someone with introverted tendencies like me, but I DO IT ANYWAY.) #wjchat

@davemeddows @wjchat what I live by. One call does it all. #wjchat

@davemeddows @wjchat 2nd for calling people. Social media supplements, not supplants, traditional journalism methods. #wjchat

@davemeddows @wjchat Haha yes, the phone should always be a top tool. It’s too easily overlooked. #wjchat

Real journalists report. Real hacks copy n steal because they’re lazy/insecure (or everyone else is). Be a real journo or don’t play #wjchat

@elanazak @wjchat It really is. Funny to see confused faces when you ask ‘Have you called them?’ #wjchat

+1 “@davemeddows: @wjchat Sounds stupid, but pick up the damn phone. So many things can be verified with a phone call. #wjchat

Q1B How does social media change the game in news verification? What about mobile? #wjchat

@wjchat A1 – Use Twitter (& other media) for tips — then following up with traditional reporting. #wjchat

RT @Jillian_Beck: @wjchat A1 – Use Twitter (& other media) for tips — then following up with traditional reporting. #wjchat

@wjchat Google Image search works for verifying photos. It should pick up hoaxes easily. #wjchat

@wjchat A1B It can make it easier to quickly find someone to chat with, but to do something great you likely need more than tweets. #wjchat

@wjchat The question stays the same: How do you really know that? Social media is another tip, but doesn’t change the fundamentals #wjchat

RT @elanazak: @wjchat The question stays the same: How do you really know that? Social media is another tip, but doesn’t change the fundame

@wjchat A1 Social is now the tip line. You start there and then go to the requisite phone calls and shoe leather to verify. #wjchat

@wjchat A1B there are channels that are official & that aren’t. if you know the channel is legit (i.e. @Number10gov or @WhiteHouse) #wjchat

@wjchat Hi #wjchat… I’m camping in the Rocky Mountains tonight, so I am missing out. See y’all next week!

social changing the game in effect > when big news agencies/personalities tweet, the public buys it as fact. which can be dangerous #wjchat

@wjchat A1B I think it makes it more tempting to be faster & go on less because everything is so instantaneous. Don’t fall for it. #wjchat

RT @elanazak: @wjchat The question stays the same: How do you really know that? Social media is another tip, but doesn’t change the fundame

@wjchat A1B cont’d – you know they can be trusted. However, something may slip under the cracks and may consider it as fact. #wjchat

@wjchat A1B. Social media also makes verification even more important. Just bc everyone is tweeting it doesn’t mean it’s true. #wjchat

: Q1) Simple one: google reverse image search. Not social media, but useful #wjchat (forgot the hashtag)

@wjchat A1B – if you see something reported on social media, and it has not been confirmed, you call. If its true, there you go. #wjchat

RT @adampopescu: social changing the game in effect > when big news agencies/personalities tweet, the public buys it as fact. which can be

Sometimes it feels stupid to bug a source, but better to feel so up front rather than too late @davemeddows #wjchat

Q1C Why even use social media to verify news? Isn’t it more important to get on the phone and call someone to verify the news? #wjchat

RT @wjchat: This week’s #wjchat is about using social media to verify news with host @elanazak, @WSJ social media editor and a co-organizer

@davemeddows It’s sad but true. Some of my best reporting moments were when I went directly to the source. #wjchat

@wjchat A1B It accelerates the pace, enables real news — and misinformation– to spread more quickly. The trick is in the sorting. #wjchat

RT @elanazak: @wjchat A1B. Social media also makes verification even more important. Just bc everyone is tweeting it doesn’t mean it’s true

@wjchat Social media gives a false sense of security & trust. We don’t really know more about people now than we ever did. #wjchat

RT @elanazak: @wjchat A1B. Social media also makes verification even more important. Just bc everyone is tweeting it doesn’t mean it’s true

@webjournalist @wjchat #wjchat Nice, but we need pictures.

RT @wjchat: Q1C Why even use social media to verify news? Isn’t it more important to get on the phone and call someone to verify the news?

RT @MikeRoe: @wjchat A1A Talking to people. (Its anxiety-producing for someone with introverted tendencies like me, but I DO IT ANYWAY.) #

@wjchat A1B I would argue the rule goes for mobile audiences. You have a responsibility to verify and convey accurate information. #wjchat

RT @elanazak: @wjchat The question stays the same: How do you really know that? Social media is another tip, but doesn’t change the fundame

@wjchat Social media is a help and danger. You can aggregate news faster, but we’ve also seen inaccurate info spread like wildfire. #wjchat

Easy to get news wrong. We’re all in a hurry to be recognized for our work, thats why we have to be careful. When in doubt, don’t #wjchat

RT @PhilipTortora: @wjchat Social media is a help and danger. You can aggregate news faster, but we’ve also seen inaccurate info spread lik

@wjchat A1C Because sources are on social media too. Confirmation can come from social media. Its just another communication tool #wjchat

A1B social media+mobile means unverified stories spread faster+are sourced by many sites that care more about views than accuracy #wjchat

RT @Jillian_Beck: @wjchat A1 – Use Twitter (& other media) for tips — then following up with traditional reporting. #wjchat

@wjchat Social can be a good connecting tool. It helps you reach out. Then you can continue verification process. #wjchat

@wjchat A1C Yeah – I don’t think social media should be used to verify; I think you need to verify social media reporting. #wjchat

@wjchat A13 Absolutely. Social media is not a verification tool. It’s a tip tool. #wjchat

@wjchat A1C Speed. Sources you wouldnt find elsewhere. Different demo than youll get from those quickly answering phones. #wjchat

@dcap That’s true but it also means reporters have more ways to find sources who can verify stories before they go online. #wjchat

RT @dcap: A1B social media+mobile means unverified stories spread faster+are sourced by many sites that care more about views than accuracy

@wjchat you can get news so much faster/unfiltered. of course need to verify first but ive found out news on twitter b4 mainstream #wjchat

@dcap So true. That drives me crazy. #wjchat

@wjchat A1C – yes. BUT, some use social media to get statements out quicker. It very much depends on the story you’re covering. #wjchat

The worst problem with so-called *social media editors* is their desire to cover every story like they know it. Not humanly possible #wjchat

.@elanazak I wasn’t writing off social media as a tip source or saying it wasn’t useful :) I was commenting on one dangerous aspect #wjchat

Q2 Who’s responsible for verifying news? Is it the editor, journalist and/or reader? #wjchat

@davemeddows @wjchat Agree. We don’t demonize police scanners. It’s just important to remember to take things w/ a grain of salt. #wjchat

RT @alex_veeneman: @wjchat A1B – if you see something reported on social media, and it has not been confirmed, you call. If its true, there

@elanazak absolutely, & self-censorship is important if you dont know details for sure. but it has huge value as that tip line #wjchat

@elanazak @wjchat …and to add, think of the deadline. What will get you a quicker reply, an inquiry through Twitter or by phone? #wjchat

Beyond click wars, click bait, and click-thru rate, worst problem with social media news is never-ending cycle. And short shelf life #wjchat

RT @elanazak: @wjchat A1C. When in doubt, call. Talking directly to the source or seeing the actual document is one of the best ways verify

@elanazak @wjchat because you are also informing on social media in real time, the idea of the deadline changes. #wjchat

@wjchat A2 Everyone in the news org must own the verification process. We are all on the hook to get it right. #wjchat

@wjchat A2 Journalist/editor for sure. Community has input of course, but not their kuleana (Hawaiian word for responsibility) #wjchat

@adampopescu That depends on where you work. Many times I’m suggesting ideas to reporters at @WSJ. They know the topic. I don’t. #wjchat

Good journalism should be like govt: Checks&balances RT Q2 Who’s responsible for verifying news? Is it the ed/journs and/or reader? #wjchat

@ax_li we should always want to verify, and human error will always be present, but this rip-and-run attitude is killing journalism #wjchat

@alex_veeneman yea, like i get desire to SCOOP everyone, but one mistake can be a career killer especially when youre starting out #wjchat

@MikeRoe @wjchat nobody cares about their Klout score ,sorry Klout, but people do care about their trust score . Where’s that metric #wjchat

@MikeRoe @wjchat Yes. The dangers of too much sharing are perpetuation of wrong info + homogenization of news. #wjchat

A4 One I’d like to see taken more seriously=getting a diverse range of sources when possible. Dig a little deeper #notjustwhiteguys #wjchat

@wjchat always verify. Providing accurate information to your readers is more important than being first. #wjchat

@adampopescu @MikeRoe @wjchat Do people still care about Klout? #wjchat

@RileySnyder @alex_veeneman Scoops also come with time/experience reporting. Early in your career, focus on getting things right. #wjchat

RT @wjchat: Q4 What are the ethical duties journalists & editors should be wary of when verifying news? #wjchat

@wjchat A4 You’re not going to be wary of your ethical duties as a journalist. You’re going to honor them (1/2) #wjchat

@wjchat A4-what source? Anyone else reporting? Did you check? I have killed some stories based on no replies. Facts – essential. #wjchat

@wjchat A4 (2/2) Journalist’s ethical duties are the same on all platforms: honesty, fairness, accuracy, diligence #wjchat

@RileySnyder @alex_veeneman Also, do readers care about scoops? Sometimes it seems it’s just a word journos use. #wjchat

It’s a joke that most talented writers/journalists I know (esp. young ones) can’t make a living. And yet potato salad gets funding?? #wjchat

If we’re talking ethics, let’s address what to do when we get it wrong. Q5 What’s your policy to address the errors? #wjchat

@NewsCannon but while it’s under dispute be prepared to answer “why don’t you have what so and so is reporting?” #wjchat #beenthere

RT @adampopescu: It’s a joke that most talented writers/journalists I know (esp. young ones) can’t make a living. And yet potato salad gets

@wjchat A5. IMO, a journalist should always admit an error. It goes back to being a credible, reliable source of news. #wjchat

@elanazak @RileySnyder @alex_veeneman @wjchat True. Only if the scoop is meaningful, relates to something of value to the user. #wjchat

@wjchat A4 Fakes aren’t flawless, just good enough to slip thru. Editors must ask if the dots line up, find their mistake. #wjchat

Hello #wjchat! What are we talking about?

@wjchat A5 – you correct it. You apologize. You own up. And if someone calls you out on it, kudos goes to them. #wjchat

RT @alex_veeneman: @wjchat A5 – you correct it. You apologize. You own up. And if someone calls you out on it, kudos goes to them. #wjchat

@wjchat I try and explain where things went wrong in verification process, in addition to taking full blame. explain that Im human #wjchat

@wjchat If it’s wrong acknowledge and correct it. No ifs ands or buts. #wjchat

Public does not give a damn about journalists. Sorry. They don’t. They care about stories/personalities. You can be 1, but it’s hard #wjchat

@elanazak @alex_veeneman as long as you’re consistent. Like for NBA news I follow @WojYahooNBA b/c hes first & right 95% of time #wjchat

@elanazak @wjchat I remember there was a report last year about Twitter developing an edit tool. If one comes, would it benefit? #wjchat

Difficult to say bc @twitter is a firehose & it would need to be tweeted several times, esp for ppl who retweeted… @alex_veeneman #wjchat

@adampopescu So true. The other thing that bugs me is the rise of the social media journalist celebrity. Self-created. So annoying. #wjchat

Last question for today: Q6 What is your No. 1 tip when it comes to verifying news? #wjchat

@wjchat Screengrab of original story, which ended up being completely wrong #wjchat http://t.co/yxARouci96

@ax_li @twitter @alex_veeneman Exactly. It’s a really tough area, especially technically, to make a correx tool work. #wjchat

@WJchat When it comes to tweets if they’re erroneous they gotta go to stop spread of bad info. Folo w/correction, deletion admission #wjchat

@RileySnyder @wjchat Sometimes I wish more readers remembered we are human. #wjchat

For all the young journalists/media hopefuls out there struggling, with a degree, real skills and talent: Hang in there. Or join PR. #wjchat

@davemeddows @wjchat Is Beyonce the editor or the reader? #wjchat

@wjchat A6: Use your instincts. Ultimately you have to stand by your decisions. If it seems fishy, ask more Qs until you’re sure. #wjchat
